"A multicultural city full of adventure" Cairns by Gypsygirl05

Cairns' main attraction is that it's a tropical city located right near the Great Barrier Reef, the oldest rainforest on Earth, the Outback, and the Atherton Tablelands. It is the last northern stop on the eastern coast before the wilderness really starts to take over, and although there are no beaches within the city, a short 20 minute drive takes you to endless stretches of white beaches that start right where the rainforest leaves off. It is framed by the Great Dividing Range and hosts a multitude of cultures. It can be touristy downtown, though the Esplanade offers a great walk along the coast. If you're looking for a slightly quieter location, head north to one of the many smaller beach communities. I lived in Smithfield, about two miles from Yorkey's Knob, and the atmosphere was a lot more Australian and less multicultural.
