"Castro-Urdiales" Castro-Urdiales by MelanieBee

Castro-Urdiales Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 23 photos

We went on a P&O mini cruise from Portsmouth to Santurzi (or Bilbao if you are Mr P&O and want to attract more customers), which is basically just a sail (is it still called sailing even if there are no sails?) there, spend 4 hours in Spain, and then sail straight back to Portsmouth. We decided to spend our limited time ashore at this former fishing village, rather than rush through the Guggenheim.

Castro is only about a 20 minute drive from Santurzi through some interesting industrial scenery, and there is very little to see in the village as well. I have been to Cantabria previously and out of all the coastal villages I have visited, I think Castro was sadly, the least inspiring. It didn't help matters much that we arrived at about 8am, and had to get back on the coach by 10.30; not early enough for breakfast, or late enough for lunch.

Perhaps if there had been more time to spend, we might have had more time to explore further than the harbour vicinity and who knows, maybe there was some fantastic experience just around the corner?

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Quiet and some good coffee & cake shops
  • Cons:Not the best Cantabrian fishing village on the map
