| The famous gothic Kölner Dom |
I visited Cologne, or Köln, in August of 2005 for World Youth Day (Weltjugendtag). The place was packed with young Catholic pilgrims who came to see the cathedral, our new pope, Benedict XVI, and to have a wonderful spiritual experience. Every day in Cologne the streets were packed with about a million young Catholics, from 193 different countries. There were flags of all sorts of nations everywhere. I have never seen anything like it!
The name of the town comes from its Latin name, "colonia," which is easy to figure out - "colony." This was an early Roman colony. The Romans were attracted to it because of its many mineral spas and baths. |
