Tangier | Walking through the kasbah |
Morocco was totally insane. We got off the ferry, and there are all these "official guides" who charge you for a tour of the old city, in the kasbah (fortress). The "guide"'s name was Allal. Basically he was a scam artist, we paid him 16 euros each, but it was worth it.
We were in these little alleyways with people selling things all over the place. We went for dinner at some restaurant that was in cahoots with Allal. They had amazing sesame bread, which I dipped in vegetable soup. Delicious. Then we had chicken cous-cous, the chicken wasn't anything to write home about. Then we had this chicken pie thing in a pastry shell with cinnamon and powdered sugar and something else - it was absolutely delicious! |

| | Our "tour" of Tangier After we ate, we went to a "bazaar" but it was really like a department store. We were the ONLY customers in it, it was obviously designed for American idiots like us. I bought a "Berber blanket" for 35€. Its pretty nice but I'm not sure if the Berbers made it or not. I "haggled" him down from 38€ to 35€, which, in retrospect, probably is no big deal. The "bazaar" guy was a sheisty little weasel. Ben bought some jewelry, Zeef thinks it's fake silver.
After that we went to an alleged "spice and herbs" shop where the owner played "professor" and went through his spiel. I felt bad for him, he wasn't very good. He tried to sell me 25 sticks of sandalwood, for 7€! No way, I can get that for $2 back home. He told me they didn't have them in America, he was full of it, I didn't buy any.
We were in a rush and we were walking fast through the alleyways. This little kid comes running to us at the end basically begging us to buy this little crappy drum for 2€. Ben felt bad for him and gave him 1€, then gave the drum to Davide. We took a taxi with Allal thru the crowded streets of old Tangér. They drive insane over there!
Allal made us think we were in the biggest hurry, and we ran like crazy to the ferry back. Se llama "the running of the fools." I felt nauseous for about 30 minutes after that run, and boy was I angry at Allal. The ferry was in no hury, we actually didn't leave until 2 hours later! I am sure that after he convinced us we would miss the ferry if we didn't run as fast as we could, our old friend Allal must have perched himself on top of a platform and enjoyed a good laugh! |
