Aachen is the city which served as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne and his successors. History buffs and artists will love this place. The Cathedral in Aachen is where the new emperor would always be crowned. Charlemagne's coronation occurred here on Christmas Day in 800 A.D. In the back of the cathedral, near the altar, is a huge golden box containing Charlemagne's remains. Unlike some other relics in Europe, these are authentic without a shadow of a doubt. This cathedral has beautiful stained glass, with pictures of famous saints and stories from the Bible, as well as 14 statues around the altar: the 12 apostles, Mary, and of course, Charlemagne. |
