I felt the most comfortable way to get to Vancouver from Sydney Australia was via Auckland New Zealand with Air New Zealand. It's just a short few hours hop to Auckland but near to 14 hours non stop to Vancouver. The Air New Zealand staff made the trip a relaxing one as they time their flights to and from Vancouver to take place during normal sleeping times.
We arrived in good condition and after a day climatising we were ready to meet the affable VT member Griff who hosted us at his club for dinner on the 2nd night. Griff was a great help organizing our flights to Ottawa and later Montrteal back to Vanvouver. We stayed at the Rosedale-On Robson a great all suite hotel with good staff and lousy WiFi arrangements.
We flew with Westjet to Ottawa. Our first experience with a local Canadian carrier. Amazed how much hand luggage is squeezed on board the venerable Boeing 737s. Some pax had 4 pieces which made for claustrophobic flights.
TIP don't buy the on-board food bring your own. Good crews and on time flights.
We stayed in Ottawa 2 nights at the well located Bostonian Executive Suites. A good residence badly needing good staff training.
We loved Ottawa helped in no small way by friendly VT member Greg who walked us around the main Parliament square and adjoining historic areas. Got to meet famed jazz pianist Oscar Petersen along with a lot of early sobering history which helped us later on to understand the country better.
We used the business class service of Via Rail for our two hour journey to Montreal. Absolutely the best way to travel as you get to see the countryside and its variances close up. Montreal is a bustling modern city with a wonderful old part where the tourist should spend most of their time. Our 3 night stay in Montreal was at the well located L'Appartement Hotel. This is a very well run hotel with big appartments quality furnished.
Montreal is where we picked up our Hertz rental a Ford Escape, perfect for three travellers. I just wish there were not so many bells attached to almost any action the driver takes. Loved the Sirius radio.
I am at my happiest when behind the wheel, any wheel, and out on the open road. We easily navigated out of Montreal with the Garmin GPS giving a lot of help. We used the historic route to Quebec City which had us roaming through wonderful countryside. The natives here speak less English than they do in France, or that's what the want you to believe. After 270kms we arrived at J.A.Moisan's Auberge for our 3 night stay in old Quebec. This delightful B&B or auberge is loaded with antiques and oozing in character. Below our rooms is the Alladin's cave of a grocery stores. It was like being transferred back to the 19th century what a wonderful experience. On the 2nd night we had dinner with VT member Jefie (Isa) and her husband who gave us wonderful night out.
- Pros:Friendliest people, patient with travellers, fabulous scenery
- Cons:Should be closer to Australia as we have a lot in common
- In a nutshell:Here is some of the best scenery in the world without the tinsel.
