The first official party to explore the locality was Charles Throsby's in 1818. Land selection began in 1861. Initially timber and later coal were the main interests as well as the housing for the railway workers. The rail link to Sydney brought tourism in the 1880s. Bundanoon lies in the outer perimeter of the Southern Highlands with an altitude of some 650metres. We are a rural town of around 2000 people. The distance from Sydney is 150kms and from the nation's capital Canberra 175kms. Bundanoon offers an invigorating mountain climate with four definite seasons. There are wonderful walks and the Morton National Park borders on the township. The inhabitants work hard at maintaining a village atmosphere and friendly welcome is offered to all visitors. As many home sites are of an acre in size we enjoy the space and freedom this affords. I cant think of a better place to live.
Being next to a national Park and a major escarpment has many charms and a few disadvantages. We get to know quite a lot of wildlife, some intimately and others just on a nodding acquaintance. Several times a day the parrots, magpies and a butcher bird come to be fed a supplementary amount of food. We get to feed the kookaburras when their natural feed is hard to find. The wombats and kangaroos take what they need when they need it as there is plenty of grass to go around.
We are surrounded by trees, mostly gum, which are wonderful but continually drop leaves and bark through all seasons and the occasional trunk and branch during storms.
This is where we go for the best coffee in the village. They also make great light lunches and snacks.
Bundanoon a hundred miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care.
- Pros:Relaxed, peaceful, friendly atmosphere. Great climate, bushland setting.
- Cons:Limited shopping, 65 kms or 40 miles from nearest city Goulburn
- In a nutshell:The bushland town with that special something.
