South Africa 2006 - 2008

Beautiful Scenery

Vaal River.........Gauteng. South Africa
The scenery is ever changing as you drive through the country. The mountains are so different from what I am used to in Canada. The outcroppings look as if they have been placed there by hand.
The beaches are magnificent and very clean. In Port Elizabeth they stretch for miles.
The highways are well maintained and have brickwork curbing as opposed to the concrete slabs I am used to seeing.
Kids of Africa

South Africa 2004 And 2006 and 2008

This was my dream come true. A trip to South Africa. I was there for five weeks and enjoyed every day.
It is a magnificent country that I hope many get a chance to see.
The only negative about my whole trip was..........I HATE Heathrow Airport. For a first time international traveler it is quite an eye opener!

My second trip was just as amazing as the first. I saw different parts of the country and probably relaxed more with the people and therefore saw more. I enjoyed Pilanesberg and the trips out of Port Elizabeth such as Addo, Grahamstown, Port Alfred and so on.

My 2008/-09 trip was again one of great pleasure. Most of my time was spent in the Johannesburg area and I didn't know there was so much to see!
The Drakensbergs added to my South African experience. A great trip again to SA.
Lining up for soup and buns.

Visiting The Townships

It was a huge privilege for me to visit some townships. I was amazed at how happy the kids were and they had so little. Their smiles are infectious.
They don't seem to mind strangers at all.
I didn't see a lot of toys but as in the picture below, the girls were very proficient with a skipping rope.

I visited the township again in 2008. This time I didn't see many kids but spent some time with the folks who give their time to feeding the hungry even though they have little themselves. I have referrred to one of them in another part of my traveloques as the "red headed" angel. Well she is no longer a redhead, she is still an angel in my books.

In A Nutshell:"South Africa is an awesome country......a must see!"

Very interesting page on SA. I'd love to visit the Cango caves as well as some townships. It's amazing to see all these kids being happy inspite of having so little.

It's wonderful that you've had these opportunities and so enjoyed your travel. I have a dear friend in Jo'burg who I am able to IM with, and she may visit here again, but I hv never had the desire to go there, despite that I know there is great beauty!

I am so glad that you enjoyed SA. There is unneccesary paranoia regarding visiting this country. Of course- I am biased, but the Cape area is truly magnificent. Did you get to winelands? Nice page, Diane.

Airport exchange will always be more expensive - just like the "duty-free" shops at OR Tambo are more expensive.
