Scenic Views of Port Alberni

We are blessed with some wonderful scenery in the Alberni Valley. We are surrounded by mountains and also have impressive waterways. One is the Somass River which runs into the Alberni Canal which continues out to the Pacific ocean.
On the river at this time of year (Sept-Oct) it is possible at low tide to see bears fishing in the river for salmon. They are quite an impressive site.

Our Harbour Quay is a hive of activity in the summer.
Locals and tourists enjoying coffee or a meal outside; families walking around looking at the scenery and shops all make for a fun afternoon..

The picture above was taken from the Quay but in November. The shot is taken toward the Pacific Ocean.

Bears and Fishing.

Many folks like to go down to the Somass River at low tide and see if they can spot a bear fishing. It's fun to watch.

Elsewhere in the town bears are fairly prevalent in bush areas and do come into residential areas where they feast on the fruit from trees and also garbage. They frequently knock over garbage cans and leave a nice mess behind.

Fishing .....More

Fishing is popular in the Alberni Valley. ....both sport and commercial fishing on the Alberni Canal and even further to the Pacific Ocean. Those who wish to hire a boat and guide can do so at the Clutesi or China Creek Marinas or by consulting the Chamber of Commerce.

The Mars water bomber pictured below is the pride of the Alberni Valley. When the roar of it's engines is heard, everyone on the streets is looking up.

Another great page, Diane! I didn't know there was that much to do in Port Alberni, I think it would be a good place to stop for people on the way to Pacific Rim National Park. Great tips and wonderful photos. I enjoyed reading all your tips!

    Greetings,
    Ann

This is the place where I would like to have my kayak and be a bit younger to paddle over the lake!

Hi Diane - good to see you will not go hungry in Port Albernini - what a great selection, spoilt for choice but I rather fancy a visit to your Little Bavaria 'cos I've enjoyed a couple of visits to the original over the years:)

Wow, Diane - what a stupendous photo!
Fingers crossed, I might be lucky enough to be in your neck of the woods later in the year.

This looks like a very nice place and the scenery great-especially that long canal of Alberni. You have showed a great aspect of the town.

Diane your corner of the world looks fascinating. The bald eagles and the bears fishing would be worth seeing. Hope you are enjoying some warmth in Canada at this time, bit cool here.
