First Impressions | Springbok in Lion Rhino Park Johannesberg. |
When I first got to Jo'burg in 2004, I was astounded at the traffic. It seemed drivers didn't bother to signal when they changed lanes. Everyone seemed impatient and the pedestrians ignored crosswalks and just crossed anywhere.
It was hard to see all of the hawkers at the traffic lights (robots). The bars on the windows were difficult a first but I soon got used to them,
My friends lived in the suburbs and the trees that lined the streets were most impressive. The people were very friendly wherever we went. The jacarunda trees were in bloom and very beautiful. |
| | Second Impressions I soon got used to the walls around the property and the bars on the windows and doors. I really liked the busyness of the streets and the stores. Not something I would want to live with but enjoyable to see.
I enjoyed all of the sights as they were so different from what I am used to. The fact that almost everyone could speak two languages really impressed me. I like the sound of Afrikaans.
There are interesting places to visit within Johannesburg from serious places like Constitution Court to fun places like the Johannesburg Zoo and the Lion and Rhino Park. |

| | Third Impressions I enjoyed my third visit to Jo'burg even more than my first visit. I found that I was much more relaxed about just about every aspect of Jo'burg life. I enjoyed the malls and my friends even let me loose so I wandered around on my own.
I was used to the different racial groups and came to appreciate them rather than to be apprehensive.
There is much to do despite the negative comments I sometimes read on this site and that is too bad as it is a great place to visit.
The weather is very good and there is often a thunderstorm in the afternoon which serves to keep things fresh and cool. I think if a person likes to visit cities then Johannesburg is a good place to go.^^Please see my Travelogue for more on Johannesburg. |

Wish I went to the Montecasino, but I did go to Rosebank where somebody liked to exchange my shoes for a 3 foot statue handicraft! I should have done it but I only had one pair...hehehe |
