Chongqing is located in central China where the Jialing River meets the mighty Yangzi River. Its history is said to date back 3,000 years when it was founded as the capital of the State of Ba in 1000 BC. It is well known for being one of the "three furnaces" owing to its stifling summer humidity which is made worse by pollution and fog. The main reason to visit Chongqing is to catch a Yangzi river cruise past the Three Gorges to Yichang and the impressive, yet controversial, Three Gorges Dam, which is what I did. The city has only a handful of attractions, the best of which is the superb Three Gorges Museum which was one of the best I visited during my 3 months in China. Other attractions include the Arhat Temple and Ciqikou - an ancient town located on the south bank of the Jialing River about 14km west of Chongqing. I would have to say that Chongqing isn't the most beautiful of cities I've ever visited and most people simply arrive here and jump straight onto the cruise ship. Me? I walked around the city and stayed in Ciqikou as it's far nicer there.
