Kranj is the fourth largest town in Slovenia and is located approx 25km north-west of the countries capital, Ljubljana. There are really two areas that make up the town – the industrial area located in the north and in the suburbs of the town and the Old Town which is where all the attractions are located. The Old Town is perched on top of an escarpment above the confluence of the Sava and Kokra Rivers, (the latter carves a canyon to the east and is worth visiting), and from down below, looks very dramatic. The Old Town, given that it sits on a rock, barely measures 1km by 250m and so doesn’t take much effort to walk around in order to see everything. I came here one afternoon after visiting Škofja Loka in the morning and it only took 2-3 hours to look round the sights including the town’s museum located in the town hall. The main attractions include the Parish Church, Prešeren’s house (where the poet lived briefly and later died), an early 16th century Tollhouse and the 16th century circular Pungert defence tower.
