I took a train to Antwerp from Brussels Nord. It only cost €6,80 if you go at the weekend and then trip only takes about 30mins. The ticket staff speak English. One piece of advice whilst at Brussels Nord is that you can buy the ticket at the International ticket windows as well as the 'normal' windows so bear this in mind if there's long queue's. Also be careful when at the platform that you get on the right train as I nearly got on a slower train until I realised that nobody else was! I was informed that the faster one was due 10mins later so if I hadn't of been told then my journey would have taken twice as long!

A trams on Rue Royale
Brussels has quite a compact city centre where most of the attractions can be visited on foot but there are a few such as the Atomium in Heysel and the Parc du Cinquantenaire that require public transport. The metro is the best way but it doesn't cover all parts of the city but it does go to both places I've just mentioned. For other areas, the tram service is the best and is very good but you have to know where you're going as there's no route maps inside. As far as tickets are concerned, its best to get a one day pass which costs €4,00 and this works for the metro, trams and buses and allows you mutiple trips on each during the day so it can save you a lot of money. There's no ticket barriers in any of the stations and I didn't see any ticket attendants anyway either at the stations or on the trams so you could get away without paying but why take the chance!

If you're coming from the UK then the best way to get to Brussels is by taking the Eurostar. It leaves London's Waterloo International and arrives at Brussels Gare du Midi and only takes about 2hrs 20mins. I would book early to get the best deals. I was looking at prices a few weeks in advance before booking mine and when I did book the prices had gone up quite considerably so bear this in mine. The journey is very smooth, except for the bit out of London which is slow (typical us eh!) but as soon as you reach the new track then you shoot off at great speed. The food onboard is a bit poor and expensive so I would take you're own.
