| The road to Assisi from Santa Maria degli Angeli |
Assisi is a beautiful medieval small town built on the side of Mount Subasio which offers lovely views across flat surrounding farmland. The town is famous for being the burial place of St Francis (c. 1181-1226) who rests in the splendid basilica that dominates the towns western end. The basilica is one of the great Christian shrines and receives vast numbers of pilgrims throughout the year. Sadly the town suffered a serious earthquake in 1997 that damaged the basilica but fortunately restoration was swift and was completed in only two years thanks to foreign investment.
The towns small streets offer visitors the chance to wander around other beautiful churches. There's more to Assisi than just the basilica. |
