I stopped off at Ferrara on my way from Bologna to Padova. I only spent a morning here which, I found later, wasn't long enough as there's quite a lot to see and do here. The two main tourist attractions are the cathedral with its lovely facade and the Castello Estense which was the D'Este families dynastic seat.
Here's what I saw as I walked around the city centre:
I parked up near Porta Paolo, a gatehouse in the city wall to the south of the city centre. From here I walked into the city centre itself passing the church of San Paolo on my left. I then entered into the main square of the city where the cathedral and city hall are located. Just down from these is the cathedral museum and to the north Castello Estense. After spening an hour or two in this area I then walked down Corso Ercole I D'Este which leads northwards from the castle and visited the Palazzo dei Diamanti. I then took a rest from my walking in a lovely park called Parco Massari before visiting the huge Certosa complex and then heading back into the city centre along Via Palestro. I didn't have time to explore the eastern end of the city where there are a few churches and palaces etc. |
