What can you say about Rome that hasn't already been said before? What you do and even say today may have it's roots in Roman history over 2000 years ago. In my mind, everyone should try and spend at least a day soaking up what Rome has to offer whether it be the historic ancient ruins, absorbing the wonderful art on display in the city's many varied museums or tasting the local food and drink, Rome has to be experienced.
Personally, I spent 3 days here and saw a great deal which I've outlined in my itinerary below. In order to really take in nearly everything, you should allow yourself at least 5 days. I made a note of all the things I wanted to see and then divided them into the 3 days that I was in Rome for. I split Rome into the following three areas:
Northeast Rome Vatican City Ancient centre, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. |
| | Day 1: Northeast Rome The first place I visited was the Spanish Steps which I took the metro to get to from where I was staying near the Termini train station.
I then walked from here to the Trevi Fountain and then across to the Quirnale.
Then from here I walked to Santa Maria Maggiore (huge wonderful basilica) and then onto Piazza della Repubblica and the basilica of Santa Maria Degli Angeli.
The last place I visited on day 1 was the nearby National Roman Museum (which was just around the corner from where I was staying). This was good to leave to the end because it doesn't close until 7:45pm. |
| | Day 2: Vatican City You need a full day, at least, to go round the Vatican City. The first thing I did was to take the metro to the Spanish Steps again so that I could walk to the Mausoleum of Augustus.
I then walked beside the River Tiber and visited Castel Sant'Angelo. Allow yourself pleanty of time to visit this castle as it's quite big.
I then walked from here down Via della Concilizione and into St Peter's Square. Here I waited in line for approx 45 minutes to get into St Peter's basilica.
Then I went into the Vatican Museums. I arrived here to no queues as it was lunchtime. I spent around 3 hours here but if you want to see absolutely everything, allow yourself at least 5. I then took the metro back to where I was staying.
Day 3: Ancient centre, Pantheon and Piazza Navona
Took the metro to the Colosseum, visited it and the Arch of Constantine and then walked around the Palatine.
I then walked back towards the Colosseum and through the Roman Forum and on to the Capitoline Hill to see Piazza del Campidoglio and the Victor Emmanuel Monument.
Then it was on through Trajan's Forum and the Forum of Augustus. I then doubled-backed towards Piazza Venezia so that I could visit Largo Argentina, Gesu church and the area around the Pantheon.
With time going against me I just has enough time to visit the area around Piazza Navona before taking a bus back to the Termini.
All-in-all I did a lot of walking but it was well worth it! |
