"Roman Mactaris" Maktar by Willettsworld

Maktar Travel Guide: 28 reviews and 101 photos

The little market town of Maktar, founded only in 1887, is commandingly situated on a high plateau in the High Tell, the hills of central Tunisia, 114km/71miles northwest of Kairouan and 69km/43miles southeast of Le Kef. The principal attraction of Maktar, in a beautiful setting, is the site of Roman Mactaris, which ranks with Dougga and Bulla Regia as one of the most important Archeological sites in Tunisia. I came here one chilly, windy winters morning on my way from Kairouan to Le Kef and was the only person visiting the ruins at that time. Yes, it's a little bit off the beaten track but well worth visiting if you're also planning on visiting Kairouan or Le Kef.
