Khorat, formerly known as Nakhon Ratchasima, is known as the gateway to the Isan region and is one of the biggest cities in Thailand. Located about 260km north-east of Bangkok, it's a modern city with the odd glimpse back to its founding’s in the 17th century here and there. The 'old' city was once encircled by walls but still retains its moat, similar to that of Chiang Mai. There's not a great deal to see here and I used it as a base for exploring the superb Phimai Historical Park which is about an hour or so north-east of the city. It's possible to reach the Cambodian border at Aranya Prathet which is where I went after staying here.
