The cave temples of Ellora, listed among the World Heritage sites, are 30km northwest of Aurangabad. They feature rock-cut caves with beautiful temples and monasteries. There are 34 caves in all, 12 Mahayana Buddhist caves (550-750 A.D.), 17 Hindu caves (600-875 A.D.) and 5 caves of the Jain faith (800-1000 A.D.). However, the finest of the group is cave 16 known as the Kailash or Kailasanatha Temple - designed to recall Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. It looks like a freestanding, multi-storeyed temple complex, but it was carved out of one single rock and is just breathtaking.
