"Temple Town" Kumbakonam by Willettsworld

Kumbakonam Travel Guide: 52 reviews and 242 photos

Kumbakonam is called the "temple town" on account of the large number of temples within it and the nearby areas. It is a very peaceful town and the festival of Mahamaham is celebrated every 12 years at the Mahamaham tank. This is one of the few places in India which has a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. I came here from Thanjavur and spent the rest of the day visiting the temples in the town before I spent my second day visiting the lovely Brihadishwara Temple in the former Chola capital, Gangakondacholapuram, 35km north of Kumbakonam. I've included this temple on this page (in the off the beaten track section) as VT doesn't have a Gangakondacholapuram destination in its database. Be sure to visit this temple if you're in Kumbakonam.
