"Tunisia - North African jewel with lots of history" Tunisia by Willettsworld

Tunisia lies on the north coast of Africa and has a population of around 10 million. It's history is littered with foreign occupations such as those of the Phoenician's from the Middle East, the Roman's, Byzantines from Turkey, Arabs and finally the French. All these empires have left their mark on the country in terms of settlements, architecture and social culture and so make for an interesting place to visit. It's also one of the most liberally minded and open Muslim countries in the world which is another reason for visiting. I first came to Tunisia with my parents back in 1989 for a week long summer holiday in Monastir before coming back for a 10 day winter tour to explore what the country had to offer other than its beaches. This is what I crammed in in those 10 days:
Day 1: Arrive in Tunis after flying from the UK.
Day 2: Tunis - Medina and Ville Nouvelle districts.
Day 3: Bardo Museum in Tunis.
Day 4: Carthage.
Day 5: Hired a car for a week from the airport and travelled south to Hammamet and then on to the Punic ruins at Kerkouane on the Cap Bon coast before heading on to Sousse.
Day 6: Sousse.
Day 7: El Jem and Mahdia.
Day 8: Kairouan.
Day 9: Maktar and Le Kef.
Day 10: Dougga and then back to Tunis.
