Goa - Sunset in India

by grandad - last update: Apr 25, 2005

"It's going to be a good one tonight"

Sunset in Goa
Whenever we ventured onto the beach in the evening we settled in a local shack for a beer. The conversation was always about the sunset - "It's going to be a good one tonight" - in fact on most evenings it started out well but the sun usually disappeared in a haze on the horizon. Anyway, who cares, what better after a hot day of exploring than settling down in a cooling breeze to watch the sunset whilst enjoying a cool beer!

CHECK MY TRAVELOGUES BELOW.
Two-wheeled transport

Land of two-wheels.

Goa is definitely a land of two-wheeled transportation - in addition to bicycles there is an abundance of motor-cycles and motor-scooters.
It is not unusual to witness a family of five all travelling along on their scooter - a frightening experience until you get used to it!

Women workers.

This picture shows an old woman stonemason from Mapusa - she was working very hard with her elderly husband forming these plaques and other things from stone.
Woman form a major part of the workforce in Goa and not just in the "feminine" workload! Woman can be seen selling in markets and by the roadside yes, but you will also see them equalling the work of the men (and sometimes surpassing it) on construction sites and digging trenches by the road - sadly you will often see their children accompanying them in this work environment.
I was told that most of such women were migrant workers and not actually from Goa - whatever the truth they were working very hard.
When near this old woman we passed a medical clinic that displayed a very large sign outside - it warned that it was an offence punishable by 5 years imprisonment to establish the sex of an unborm child! At the time we wondered if this had anything to do with prejudice against female offspring. Females in Goa are certainly worth their place in society if our experience was anything to go by.
