FUKUROI and STATION 28 of the OLD TOKAIDO ROAD

Fukuroi City is located in western Shizuoka prefecture, The city is very accesable by the Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokaido Line, Tomei Expressway, National Highway Route 1, National Highway Route 150 ..... Tokyo is 240 kilometers away and Osaka 320 kilometers away.

Climate is typical of other Pacific coastlines, having mild temperatures and heavy rainfall.

Summer, there are many rainy days due to the high temperature and humidity levels brought on by winds from the south.

Winter, seasonal winds from the west bring clear weather with low temperatures and dry air. The cold wind called "Enshu Karakkaze", characteristic of this region, blows during the winter months making it feel colder than it actual temperature.

This region also has one of the longest durations of sunshine in the country, and with an average annual temperature of about 17 degrees Celsius, offers a comfortable environment throughout the year.

IN HISTORY

Fukuroi is in the middle of the 53 stations of Tokaido. You can still see pine trees around Fukuroi. There are also famous temples (kasuisai, yuzan-ji and Hattasan sonei-ji) in Fukuroi.

Kasuisai temple, it literally means "may sleep". there is a story related to Tokugawa Ieyasu. 11th chief priest of the temple once helped Tokugawa Ieyasu (establisher of the Tokugawa shogunate) who was a hostage of Imagawa at that time. Ieyasu invited the priest to his Hamamatsu castle to express his appreciation. However, the prist began sleeping while talking with Ieyasu. Looking at the priest sleeping peacefully and innocently, Ieyasu was pleased, and said "nemuru yoshi" (you may sleep). After the incident, the temple was renamed to "kasuisai (may sleep)".

Roadside tea stall

This is a makeshift reed-screened tea stall set up at the roadside..Palanquin bearers are taking a rest beside a woman who is making a fire to boil water in an iron kettle hanging from a branch of a big tree...

One of the palaquin bearers lights his pipe from the fire while the other is dozing in the palaquin..

The composition of this work is interesting in that most of the objects in the picture are pushed to the left side but a good balance is maintained by directing the glance of a man resting on a bench to a swallow perched stop a high wooden notice-board at the right...

Beautiful temple area and buildings !! The Nio must do a very good job, their eyes look so real and protecting ! And wonderful page :-)) You show Japanese treasures with the harmony they show :-)) Thanks !
