STILLLLLLL....under construction

Kyoto stretches from southeast to northwest in the central and northern Kansai Region (Midwest Japan).

Kyoto became the capital of Japan in the 8th century. It had flourished as the center for Japanese politics, economy and culture for some 1,200 years until the capital functions were transferred to Tokyo in the mid 19th century.

The Sanjo Ohashi, or sanjo bridge was the ending point of Tokaido.

Kyoto had been a capital of Japan from the Heian period (794) to the Edo period (1868), and there are so many historical spots in Kyoto.

HISTORICAL MONUMENT OF ANCIENT KYOTO

KYOTO by HIROSHIGE

In the foreground the "long" bridge over the Kamo River, and people crossing over, with the town beyond, behind which rise hills overlooking it.

While decending to Kyoto, travellers could enjoy a panoramic view of the elegant imperial capital from the mountain pass and undoubtedly felt joy and relief at seeing the final destination of their journey from Edo.

In those days it was the wish of every Japanese to see Kyoto once in his life.
