Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and simple minds discuss people. Eleanor Rosevelt |
THE TOKAIDO ROAD THE TOKAIDO HIGHWAY, which started from Nihombashi in EDO(today is called TOKYO) and finish at Sanjo Ohashi in KYOTO...
Covered a total distance 492 km...
It was just 400 years ago that the TOKAIDO became fully equipped as a major highway.. HOW DID IT ALL START After winning the famous battle of SEKIGARA in 1600, TOKUGAWA IEYASU, founder of the TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE, inaugurated what was known as the TENMA-SEI(post horse system)..
as one of the many admisnistrative measures that he took to establish the feudal goverment system...
The tenma system was designed to set up post towns along major highways in oeder to provide manpower and horses to facilitate the mobility of goverment officials as well as the physical flow of goods and the dissemination of information...
Under this system, 53 post towns were created along the TOKAIDO HIGHWAY...... WHAT MADE TRAVELING ALONG THE TOKAIDO SO POPULAR TOKAIDOCHU HIZAKURIGE is a comical travelogue about the TOKAIDO ROAD ..
Was written by Juppensha Ikku who serialzed his stories with woodblock landscape prints produced by UKIYOE artist HIROSHIGE....
It was 1832 that HIROSHIGE set out on his first trip to KYOTO along the TOKAIDO HIGHWAY....
A distinguished series of 55 works, born of his observations and experiences, conveys the atmosphere and sentiment prevailing in each post on the highway..
His work portray beatifully in fine detail , he describe seasonal changes as seen in the mist in srping, showers in summer, clear blue skies in autumn and snow in winter.....
He really did pay attention to every minute detail ...who ever the person was, a samurai warrior, townpeople or workmen.... So at the moment most of my travel has been to see all these post town and find the history behind it all....Its been fun , more like a treasure hunt.... |
On the trail there were 53 RECOGNISED STATIONS or stages, and these, with the starting point at the Nihon-Bashi at Edo and the finish at Kyoto, make up the 55 stages commonly found in the series of views of the Tokaido Road by HIROSHIGENihonbashi 1 "MORNING SCENE" Kanagawa Prefecture Shinagawa 2 Kawasaki 3 Kanagawa 4 Hodogaya 5 Totsuka 6 Fujisawa 7 Hiratsuka 8 Oiso 9 Odawara 10 "THE SAKAWA RIVER" Hakone 11 "PICTURE OF THE LAKE" Shizuoka Prefecture Mishima 12 "MORNING MIST" Numazu 13 Hara 14 Yoshiwara 15 Kambara 16 SNOW AT NIGHT" Yui 17 "SATTA PASS" Okitsu 18 "THE OKITSU RIVER" Ejiri (shimizu)19 "DISTANT VIEW OF MIHO PINE GROVE" Fuchu (shizuoka)20 "THE ABE RIVER" Mariko 21 "POPULAR TEA SHOP" Okabe 22 "MOUNT UTSUNO" Fujieda 23 *"FUJIEDA IN DISTRICT" Shimada 24 "SURUGA BANK OF THE OI RIVER" Kanaya 25 "ENSHU BANK OF THE OI RIVER"% Nissaka 26 "SAYO-NO NAKAYAMA" Kakegawa 27 "DISTANT VIEW OF MOUNT AKIBA" Fukuroi 28 "ROADSIDE TEA STALL" Mitsuke 29 Hamamatsu 30 "DESOLATE WINTRY SCENE" Maisaka 31 TRUE SCENE OF IMAGIRE" Arai 32"ARAI CHECKPOINT" Shirasuka 33 Aichi Prefecture Futugawa 34 Yoshida 35 Goyu 36 Akasaka 37 Fujikawa 38 Okazaki 39 "YAHAGI BRIDGE" Chirifu 40 Narumi 41 Miya 42 Mie Prefecture Kuwana 43 Yokkaichi 44 Ishiyakushi 45 Shono 46 Kameyama 47 Seki 48 Shiga Prefecture Sakanoshita 49 Tsuchiyama 50 Minakuchi 51 Ishibe 52 Kusatsu 53 Otsu 54 Kyoto Prefecture Kyoto 55
