Camping at Vyssí Brod After a 4 hour coach from Brevnov in Prague we arrived at the quiet campsite of Vyssí Brod. There is one toilet and two showers. They are renovating so I expect there will be more facilities in the near future, including a kitchen area which was nearly complete. From our fellow Czech companions we learnt how to cook fat frankfurts(sausages) on sticks over an open fire. The camp ground is along the Vltava. Our canoes where organised through Ingetours http://www.ingetour.cz/boat-rent al-canoes-rafts/general/basic-information |

Will we go down this one? The canoe trip we did takes two days and covers 34km. There are many weirs along the way. The river was not as high as it can be, so a lot of the ramps from the weirs were trecherous. One of our party needed stiches in her leg after capsizing at the end of one. Canoes can be carried around the weirs - and we did this for a few that we saw every second canoe capsize. There is a great website by Malecek http://www.malecek.cz/mapa/index .php?lang=en that includes photos and a 'how to go down the ramps at each weir' - but the water was much lower for us and the ramps mostly ended in a wall of water, unlike the videos on the site that make it look like a walk in the park. |

Cesky Krumlov The second night we stayed at a new campsite in area of former "Otavan" (150 m behind the weir Papousci skala and 200 m before camp Nove Spoli - the more popular main campsite. It is easily missed as it is on a rise just past the weir. If you come to the big campsite you know you have gone to far! Again they were in the midst of renovation, this time there were 4 brand new showers and 4 toilets, but eventually will be a very modern hostel for 10 and camp site for 50. It is only a few km walk to town and their is a local bus that comes around the hour. A taxi to town is less than 100Kc (we asked for the taximeter to be turned on and it was 80Kc). Cesky Krumlov is beautiful and it was great that we had the opportunity to walk and canoe around it. It is a very friendly atmosphere on the river and everyone seems willing to help and every weir was an adventure, that if you happened to capsize a complete stanger was always there to give a hand. As you pass other canoes people say Ahoj and try to chat...in Czech mainly but also in German (as you are pretty close to the Austrian border in Cesky Krumlov) |
