Venice Revisited

by dfactor - last update: Aug 16, 2006

Water & Tourists Everywhere

Realto overlooking the Grand Canal
I was in Venice for the 2nd time in 2004. The 1st time I stepped foot on Venice was back in 2002. Both in the summer (Aug in 2002 and June in 2004) & tourists visiting Venice at its peak . The 1st thing that struck my mind about Venice is the water, there is water everywhere. In fact, there is no roads for automobile in Venice. It's water, motor boats, Vaporetto (water taxi) and of course the you-must-try-once Gondolas. I'm glad I got on to the Gondolas in my last trip, I'd one hell of a great time on the Gondolas.

Note: My tour made stops to Rome, Pisa, Florence, Milan , Venice & finally Assisi. (Back to Rome again for a costumed dinner party, before flying back to KL)
Gal feedings pigeons in St. Mark's Square

Backstreets, Dead-end Alleys & Pavements.

Apart from the boats, it's equally good to experience Venice on foot. The islands is like a maze of houses and canals, backstreets and alleys. Please don't be alarmed when you walk into a dead-end alleys and don't know which way to go (as I was).
I'd a great time exploring Venice on a beautiful summer morning, it's good to stay away from the tourist hordes in St. Mark's Square. You get a glimpse on how it's like for an average Joe or more appropriately, an average Venetian lead their lives.

Stay Longer......

I wish I could have stay longer in Venice, both my trips were rather short stops. I don't think I've trully experience Venice in her entirety. For a start, I completely missed out Burano (Some VTers have really good accounts on Burano), I don't get the chance to go into St. Mark's Basillica, San Giorgio Marggiore and Santa Maria Della Saluta, Accademia Bridge and many many more. Perhaps one day, I will come back to Venice again.

Pros:"One in the world, water & bridges everywhere."
Cons:"Too crowded with tourists in summer, crazy expensive."
In A Nutshell:"It's all worth it. Venice is as good as I remember her, if not better."

Great pic of Venice. My last visit was in 1997 - wow! almost 10 years. Well, life has to have humor but there is a certain limit. Don't you think so? Ho ho ho....

Very nice photos, and a good overview. Someday I will travel there!

You have some really nice photos of Venice. It's a shame that you did not get inside St. Mark's--it is one of my favorite churches. Maybe the third visit to Venice will be luckier.
