where I grew up

Ramsbottom (no laughing that really is the towns name) is a quintessential english mill town located to the north of manchester. it even has some cobbled street left. I spent most of my childhood here although i have not lived there for about 12 years, my mum still lives near the town, and after showing my mum the VT website a few weeks ago she insited i did a page on ramsbottom. most of the stuff here is from memory but my mum is sending me some upto date stuff on the shops pubs etc so i will add them later. so here is my ramsbottom page for my mum.

Bit of history

Ramsbottom is a Georgian town which developed from farm settlements and hamlets, but it was the industrial revolution (early 19th century) that really brought the town into its own. The town provided the perfect location for the new industrial age as the river Irwell provided a power source, and many mills grew up around the town. Probably the most well known of the ramsbottom mill owners were the Grant brothers who moved to the town from Scotland in 1783, and were later immortalised by Charles Dickens in Nicolas Nickleby as the Cheeryble Brothers. There are a lot of remainders of the Grant brothers throughout the town (As a child I went to St Andrews Church which was built by the brothers) But they are not alone in being famous historical figures to herald from this area, Robert Peel (1788-1850) has links to the town his father was one of the richest mill owners in the area. He was prime minister of Britain twice in the mid 1800s and is famous for the development of the modern day police force.
