Merely a stopover | Mereani's Backpackers Inn |
Fiji was merely a stopover for us on our way to my main goal of the whole trip: Kiribati. (My son's main goal was Brisbane, Australia.) Instead of flying directly from Norway to Kiribati, we had around-the-world tickets with the Star Alliance, but they don't fly to Kiribati, we had to buy separate tickets with Air Nauru from Nadi to Tarawa and back again. We found it too stupid not to see any of the country while we were there, but only three nights outbound and one night on the return did not give us a lot of possibilities.
This was our first REAL backpacking on the tour, since we had mostly stayed with family in the US and Canada, and spent a few nights in hotels. The first few nights of our journey we stayed at the YWCA home in London, but that was booked ahead. In Fiji we just arrived with no plans. We did not have to worry, hords of tourist agents were lined up in the arrival hall, trying to catch our attention. I singled out a nice looking lady (or she singled out me) to ask her for advice. She more or less shanghaied us, took us to her "office" and laid our plans. This way we ended up in Mana Island, of which I have created a separeate page. |
