  • It might be wise to have a hostel membership when going backpaking. But you should get one BEFORE coming to Australia, especially if you intend to buy the Great Southern Railway Pass, which must be purchased before arriving. (See my tip about rail passes). With the membership, you can get (you get it automatically if you join YHA IN Australia, otherwise ask for it) a book which is a combined accomodation and discounts guide. BUT, there is a big but: If you are like me, and do not like to plan too long ahead, you might not have much use of a membership. Hostels are often full, you need to book ahead. AND you can often make a good bargain with travel agents at railway stations for a hotel room or a backpackers. Though many backpackers will give you a discount if you are a YHA or HI member, as well.

My advise is: If you like planning ahead, get a membership and book your stays at least a week before you arrive, you can book via Internet. Study the discounts guide, and use it, you might be able to save some money :-)

Sorry to know you lost a CD with photos. I love the opening shot, how cute! Fascinating to read about your train journeys, who would say you should bring your own food to a train?! How peculiar, thanks for sharing, great tips!
