Tallest trees in the world Coast Redwood, also known as California Redwood, are the tallest trees in the world, up to 115 meters / 370 feet. Their cousin the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) have thicker stems and live longer, but are shorter, 95 meters / 311 feet.
A strange feeling standing in front of a tree that might be 2000 years old! The picture is taken in Tall Trees Grove. A taller tree than those around us here has recently been discovered not far away, but the ranger at the visitor center claimed it was not accessible :-( |
| | Lucky us There is a locked gate on the Tall Trees Access Road, we had to obtain permit and a secret code for the lock at one of the visitor centers. Only a restricted number of vehicles are allowed into the area on a daily basis. Not that is was any problem; We saw one other car on our way up from Orich to the gate, and met one inside the restricted area. |
| | Wildlife The wild animals are more afraid of us than we are of them. No big risk of running into any, but be aware anyway. |

KimberlyAnn Sat Apr 5, 2008 20:45 UTC Nice tips! I am sorry that we missed out on the Kuchel Visitor Center and the tall trees trail. Too bad about the rude people you met, that was absolutely uncalled for!! | VeronicaG Sat Sep 1, 2007 01:54 UTC Very nice commentary on your visit to Redwood National Park. So sorry to hear about your negative encounter with the locals--rudeness is not accepted anywhere. I hope the rest of your trip was a pleasant one.... | PinkFloydActuary Mon Jan 29, 2007 12:43 UTC Good stuff...What we saw was pretty neat, but since we were only there for a day (chalk that up to bad planning), we missed many of the highlights :( | mikelisaanna Sat Jan 27, 2007 17:43 UTC Great photos. We'd love to get there some day and see the big trees in person. |
