Bisevo is a small island of 5,8 km2 situated in the eastern part of the Adritic Ocean appr. 5 km south west of Vis. The highest point of the island is Strazenica, 240 meters above sea level.
This part of the Adriatic has been populated for thousands of years by neolitic, greek and illyrian tribes. But the oldest evidence of settlement on Bisevo is from the eleventh century, when the Benedictine monastery and church St Sylvester was built. The polpulation of between 100 and 200 is spread in 8 villages, and mostly lives from growing wine grapes and olives, and from fishery. (A newer source claims that the population is now 14!) The most famous wine is called "Plavac", which means "the blue one".
The island is built of limestone and has numerous cave, the most famous one is the Blue Grotto - Modra Spilja. |
