In Betio you find the only deep water harbour on Tarawa, and there are probably not many others on the other islands of the Gilberts. A cargo ship arrives once every month with supplies from Australia, like beer and rice, and smaller boats go to the other islands. Likewise, export articles like copra and fish products are transported via Betio harbour. There are cargo vessels going between Tarawa and the Phoenix and the Line islands, too. In addition to the harbour, there is a shipyard there, some industry and the main power station of Tarawa.

Betio is a city with more than one street. There are some nice areas and some not so nice with several bars, pubs and discoes and quite a few drunks. There is a lot of litter scattered around, but like elsewere on Tarawa they have started som recirculation, at least of empty drinking cans.
