This is not the finest hotel I have lived in, nor is it the most expensive. Standard and service is quite OK, but the homey atmosphere is what I liked most about it. And the view of the railway station, offcourse :-) We spent two periods there in january 2002, all together 14 nights.
Tourist agents have different deals with hotels in Australia (as in many other countries), we saw the same room advertized for AUD 112, 113 and 119. One thing is sure, though, it is never cheaper to go directly to a hotel without pre booking. We made our deal through an agent at Roma Street Station and paid AUD 82 per night for one adult and one child, breakfast included. At that time the australian dollar was about half of the US one.
On the first picture you can see how close the hotel is to downtown Brisbane. There is an entrance to Roma Street Parklands right across the street, visible on the car crash picture which is taken from our window.
Unique Qualities: The manager (owner?). I believe the hotel was privately owned and not part of any big chain. He was present, working among his employees, warm and friendly. On our second arrival he himself picked us up from the railway station and welcomed us home :-). And when we left, he gave my son presents.
