Schokland

In the 20th century (1923-1932) a piece of the IJsselmeer (former Zuiderzee) was transfomed to land. This land was called Noordoostpolder and is nowadays part of the province Flevoland. The former island Schokland became a part of the Noordoostpolder. Untill 1859 people were living at Schokland, but because of many floods they were evacuated. Remarkable fact: after 1859 untill becoming a part of the Noordoospolder there were no floods at Schokland anymore......
You can visit the intriguing museum where you can learn al lot about Schoklands history.

Old Emmeloord 1

Along the contours of the former island Schokland are hiking routes, so you can walk all along the island. At the Northern point of Schokland once was a village called Emmeloord. Emmeloord was south of the modern town Emmeloord, wich is not situated at Schokland.
In the landscape you can see the remains of the old Emmeloord port.

Old Emmeloord 2

This house was built in 1922. Although there were no people living at Schokland anymore, the port was still in use and the portmaster was doing his job in this building.
