At the meandering river Sure you can find a little town called Esch-sur-Sure. The first time I visited this small but beautiful town was 1968. And whenever I come back I see it's hardly changed.
Esch-sur-Sure grew around a castle built in 927. The castle was constructed to offer protection against marauding troops of Hungarians. From the castle only a ruin remains. The rest of the ruin dates from later centuries.
The castle consists of two towers. The lower, rectangular is built in the 10th century and the restaurated romanesque castle chapel belonged to the main castle which was expanded in the 13th century with a bailey and circular walls. The upper projecting watchtower was only added in the 16th century. It's on a nearby hill and can only be reached through the lower lying town. |
