Vianden - the castle 1 | The Castle, October 13, 2007 |
When you enter Vianden, the first thing you see is the big castle high above the town. Its foundations go back till the 10th and 11th century and its main buildings were built in the 12th and 13th century. In 1417 the castle came into the possession of the House of Orange-Nassau from which the Dutch Royal Family are the direct descendants. They owned the castle until the French Revolution. The castle was then confiscated but returned to the dutch King Willem I in 1820. He sold the castle to a businessman who took and then sold everything that was inside it. After this the castle fell into decay. In 1966 extensive restauration works started and at present the restaurations are still going on. |
