Varna is a great place to spend some time on the beach, whether it be as a main destination or as a stopover on a tour. It's a small resort, which attracts tourists without being as crass as nearby Sunny Beach or Golden Sands.

Even in the middle of summer, the sandy beach is crowded, but not unpleasantly so. You'll find plenty of room to put your towel down without sitting in other people's laps. The Black Sea water is shallow and warm, so ideal for kids, or bad swimmers like me.

There are numerous cafes and bars along the beach to grab something to eat, although be aware that EVERYTHING is in Cyrillic, so it's worth learning the basics of the alphabet in order to get anywhere. Further down, there's a strip of bars and nightclubs which open right out onto the beach, where there's usually a party to be found for anyone.

And it's cheap. Even on our budget of fifteen pounds a day, we struggled to spend it all. A great seaside break!
