Cape Town Warnings Or Dangers

Crime - theft: Hold on to your bag!
  • Tip Rating:
  • As in all other countries, or cities for that matter, the local "thief" can spot a tourist a mile away. So, if you you are carrying your passport, airtickets or other personal belongings with you while sightseeing, hold on to your bag!
There are many incidents of tourist theft in Cape Town. The most common are the "street kids "begging for money, and before you know it, your bag is gone!
Then, there is 'the professional thief' , always on the lookout for laptops, cameras etc.
I found that travelling with my bag across my shoulder, hanging in front of me helpful. In this way , you can see it.
Cape Town is beautiful. Do not be put of by this. It will always remain the Mother city of South Africa. A "must see" destination.

Areas to avoid: Ask before you go surfing!

  • Before you go bathing or surfing in Cape Town, ask whether it is safe to do so. Our waters have been filled with sharks! Last year more than one shark attack has been reported. Some have been seriously injured. There has only been an incident where one person have been killed in the Muizenberg area. This year, it is False Bay, you have to watch out for these Great White Sharks.
I am enclosing some pic's of what our local newspapers had to say within the last two days. Apparently, according to the newspapers the Great Whites migrate all the way from Australia, then back again.

Driving / Car safety: Do not open your car window at the stop streets!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tourists should be well aware that if they should decide to hire a car in Cape Town, not to open their windows, when they are being harrassed by the local so called "beggars" on the street corners or intersections. Sometimes these "beggars" can be quite harmless. The harmless ones are the "bergies" as they are being reffered to in Cape Town. These "bergies" normally live wherever they find shelter. They will normally harass you to open the window to give you money. One can never be sure though, especially at night. An experienced thief might be on the lookout for something more.
Cape Town is beautiful, and to drive around and see her in all her natutural beauty is a amazing!
So, do not let this deter you from hiring a car. The scenic drives are too spectacular to miss.

Driving / Car safety: City Driving.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town Driving / Car safety
  • A "Taxi" with "help" calling for
  • passengers.
  • by luckyzen
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Motorists should be aware to keep their eyes on the road, and not be distracted by taxi drivers hooting or shouting from their taxis. These taxis are usually like a small mini bus carrying about 15 passengers at a time. Sometimes the taxis are overloaded, with someone hanging out of a window shouting for passengers. He is NOT shouting at you!
For those tourists who happen to be driving in a hired car, please do not be distracted. The driver of the taxi is NOT hooting at you! Focus on the road. This too, is merely a sign that he is looking for passengers. The locals are well aware of this.
For the tourists, this can be something to remember!

Hi Faiza, your city is an excellent location, to enjoy the holydays, and to eat the delicious: “Pecan Chocolate Fudge Cake” or “Pavlova with a mixed fruit salad”. A GOOD PAGE!!! Good wishes from Vienna! Gabriela
