On the biggest island of Seine, "Ile-de-la-Cit?", was built being the first city kernel of the religious and terrestrial life of Paris. Here was built also very soon, the cathedral Notre-Dame, the most important construction of Paris. The cathedral was erected over the rests of an early-Christian basilica that had been built over a temple from Roman time on the other hand. The construction was ordered 1163 by the bishop Maurice de Sully. The church was first 1345 finished. The rigors of the weather, the human attacks, the tragedy of numerous wars changed its countenance, above all during the French revolution, in the course of the centuries as one even considered in the year 1793 to tear off the church. In the year 1802, it was intended finally again for the sacral construction. Napoleon's coronation rite through pope Pius VII became taken place into the cathedral NOTRE-DAME, in the year 1804. Under Violet-le-Duc, the church was restored by 1844-1864.

On the end of the Champs-Elysées, on the Chaillot hill, stretches itself, the wide Place de Gaulle. From there, goes out in the radial system, more than twelve big arteries. In the middle of the place, is placed, completely isolated, mighty, and impressive, the Arc de Triomphe. It was built by Napoleon Bonapartes as monument in the order for his "big army" and was begun by Chalgrin in the year 1806. In the year 1836, the construction was completed. The Arch is 55 meters high, 45 meters wide, and has only one single gate and a helix stairway with 282 steps. The history of the monument is shown in a small museum in the inside of the construction. The best visit time is in the early morning because the light lets the sculptures then appear especially plastic, or in the late afternoon, then, the sun sinks over the roof of the Arch of the triumph. The wonderful outlook of the 55 meters high terrace of the Arch is an unforgettable experience. One overlooks the entire boulevard of the Louvre, until of La Défense, and the place in form of a star, Place Charles de Gaulle.

The Eiffel Tower, the landmarks of Paris, was the concept of Gustave Eiffel that was involved also at the construction of the statue of liberty of New York. . The building is unique and it surprises through its gigantic and extraordinary dimension. The construction is a witness of a human will that wants to manifest his genius's size and was erected from occasion of the world's fair in the year 1889. At that time, were the years of the industrial revolution, years of the advance and new technical achievements. Many people insulted this universally known tower as an ugly monster and demanded its summary. And however, more than 200 million people have it climbed, since its inauguration 1889. The most frequently is visited, the most upper platform, today from approximately six million tourists per year. Quite no matter, as you it finds, you must see from the proximity, this marvel from 7000 tons of metal. It is a grand line of metal at the Parisian heaven that seems to triumph over all the older buildings of the city. If the old palaces and churches stand symbolically for the past, so the Eiffel tower is a symbol of the future conquests of the human being. It is, altogether, 320 meters high and consists of more than fifteen thousand metal parts. The weight of seven thousand tons rests on four pillars with a cement pedestal. It is into three floors subdivided: the first is 57 meters high, the second 115, and the third 274 meters. In each of these floors are restaurants and bars that invite the tourist to a break and offer him a unique gaze.

This century-old museum lodges one of the most extensive and most important art collections of the world. The most folk finds a visit in the Louvre museum, as breathtaking and staggering, a real joy and an unforgettable adventure. Others, against it, find this, only frustrating and exhausting. You must, but, never forgets: You would need years in order all to see. The secret recipe for a fertile tour is peaceful speed and the correct selection. The beginnings of the Louvre decline until in the year 1200, as Philipp August, let build, in the proximity of the river, a fortress for defence purposes.

The course of the Seine is, from which sources in Burgundy, to the canal coast, 776 kilometres long. In the year 1765, William Cole called the river a "messy ditch." Nowadays, the river is regulated, with an ingenious system of sluices. The water of the Seine became clearly cleaner in the last years. In the 37 Seine bridges, is mirrored, the entire Parisian construction history. The eldest and most famous bridge is called Pont Neuf (newcomer bridge). The bridge was built in the year 1604, and was, an abbreviation, for the way from the Louvre to the abbey of St-Germain-des-Prés. The newest bridge, opens 1999, is the Passerelle de Solferino, a metal-y footbridge from the Quai des Tuilleries to the left shore (near to the Musée d'Orsay). The most splendid bridge is, still, the Pont Alexandre III with gilt nymphs, bouncy horses, candelabra, lions and garlands. On the Seine, a trip to the legendary bateaux-mouches belongs to the standard program.

The history of the city Paris was always, inseparably connected with the Seine. The river is, as it were, the lifeline of Paris. It flows through the heart of the city. Many wonderful constructions at the shore of the Seine, is mirrored in the river. Paris is one of the few metropolises that one can view quite well from the river. Meet and night, you can past-glide with the boat, at many sights, and many of the famous constructions and bridges, in new, magical light, admire. Only three centuries ago, served the Seine, as sewer. Simultaneously, the river was the main source, for drinking waters. Of course, served the Seine, also as trade route. Baden in the river, in the hot summer day, was, since 1609, an activity and a relaxation possibility. Nevertheless, swimming belongs to the past there. Much bateaux-mouches and other amusement boats pull past, on the Seine, at the famous sights.

President Georges Pompidou declared in the year 1969, he wishes for Paris a culture centre, that is museum and place of inventive work at the same time. The construction should begin in the district "plateau Beaubourg." For this project, began an international competition. Winner was the project of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. As the building 1977 was opened in the middle of the decrepit Beaubourg quarter, there was a protest storm that never has lain down completely. The building covers a surface of 100,000 square meters. Each pipeline at the outside smoothed with another colour and every colour corresponds to a certain function. The Centre is accepted as a construction of lovable grotesqueness. The building is as gallery, far, popular, as anybody could foresee at its opening. Musée National d’Art Moderne (the national museum for modern time art), is accommodated on the last three floors of the Centre Pompidou.

The town hall always was the centre of the Parisian city history. The town hall of Paris is placed on a big place that was used for public purposes of the capital more than five centuries. The new building is a copy of the renaissance construction that stood earlier on this place. The aged edifice was destroyed in a fire in the year 1871. The present-day construction got the bearings by the former construction. The design of the present building comes from the architects Deperthes and Ballu and was accomplished in 1882. The construction is impressive and unique with its pyramidal increased pavilions with cupola and its 136 stone figures, positioned on all four facades of the palace. The palace turned in the course of the times, into the arena of important historical events.

The Cnciergerie is an imposing building on the west part of the Île de la Cité. At first, this building was the residence of the king's concierges, and in 1391, the edifice was transformed into a prison building and it remained so until the year 1914. Many important and known persons were prisoners here and many famous prisoners waited here for the execution. One of those was the Marie Antoinette that waited here 76 days her death. In 1793, she was decapitated. The justice palace, the place of the Parisian court, stands now, here in this construction ensemble.
