My dad lives in Manilla. It's the closest town to the gliding club at Lake Keepit and consequently sees more than its fair share of international visitors. People come from all over the world to glide at Keepit. The town itself is typical of New South Wales country towns: two petrol stations, two pubs, two restaurants, one supermarket, one chemist, one post office, one Chinese restaurant, one RSL club and one recently closed bank. |
It is prettily situated on the confluence of two rivers: the Manilla and the Namoi. It is within half an hour's drive of Tamworth - a reasonably good sized town considered the heartland of country music in Australia. Manilla is two hours from the Warrumbungle Range, an interesting row of eroded volcanic cores making an unusual lansdcape. This picture attempts to capture the whole range in one shot. It was taken from the Oxley Highway between Tooraweenah and Coonabarabran. There is a "Driver Reviver" stop thoughtfully located at just the right spot. |

Manilla is only an hour away from one of the lovliest country towns in New South Wales - Armidale. The road to Armidale crosses the Great Dividing Range in dramatic style. You're driving along the highway and all of a sudden the land drops away beneath you as you almost dive off the edge of the plateau. |
