So much to see.... Bavaria is a very large region in southeast germany. If you are looking for the typical gingerbread houses, you will find them in Bavaria. There are hundreds of crystal clear lakes for boating or swimming. The alps are there for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, basically any winter sport can be done in Bavaria. Hiking is a favorite pasttime of Bavarians. With all the mountains in the region, is it a wonder that Bavarians start hiking as children and continue thru their whole lives? I find Bavaria to be so relaxing. The scenery is some of the most beautiful on earth. Driving from town to town is like going back in time. The roads thru town are narrow and the houses end right at the street. It isn't uncommon to see pastures right along the roadway, and chickens walking in front yards. Bavaria has so much to offer, you could spend weeks here and never be bored. |
Castles, castles, castles.... One thing Bavaria is known for is its castles. You have the famous Neuschwanstein, the fairy tale castle on the hill, for starters. This castle was built by Mad King Ludwig. He built beautiful castles all over Bavaria and in the process, bankrupted the country. Is it any wonder that he drowned mysteriously even though he was a good swimmer? The irony is that these castles are now the main draw of tourists from all over the world. Some of his other castles are Linderhof and Schloss Chiemsee. Ludwig wasnt the only one who built castles. Bavaria is known for its castles. The romantic road drives you past dozens of them. The castles in Bavaria arent all in pristine condition. There are tons of castle ruins. These are so much fun to explore. Frankensteins castle is just outside of Frankfurt and outside of Rein Main air force base is another castle ruin in the town of Landstuhl. Both are great fun to get lost in and imagine what it was like in the day of knights and horses. Lets not forget Heidleburg castle. This is a great castle that offers a tour and a gift shop. If you travel down the romantic road not only will you end at Neuschwanstein castle but you will pass at least a dozen castles on the way. The history you see from these castles is unbelievable. You can feel the history just oozing through the stones. Spending time in any one of these castles is well worth the trip. Most of the castles still have the original furnishings and paintings inside so you can get a clear picture of what it must have been like to be in their shoes. |
