I didn't get enough the first time... Haarlem is such a lovely city, and with so much to do and see, I was surprised to find myself to be nearly the only tourist in the Market Square during my mid-week visit. Getting around was an easy enough walk from the main Train Station and every step was far quieter than the walkways of Amsterdam. I only visited for a day but found so many enticements I now look forward to spending a few days here.
If you are arriving by Train, be sure to stop next door and visit the Haarlem Tourist and Visitor’s Office. I found their staff to be very knowledgeable and friendly. They offer an excellent map for about 1 euro that lists all of the local points of interest and more. There are also several excellent VT member sites that I found very useful in planning my visit.
If you require peace and quiet to get a good night’s rest, then staying overnight in Haarlem is probably an excellent alternative to rooming in Amsterdam. For about 6 euro one can ride the train with a round-trip pass, and in less than 20 minutes be cruising the canals of Amsterdam.

hello, birthday-mate! i agree with your observations that museums administrators must be very knowledgeable, for the visitors to truly appreciate what there is. have the same experience in 2 or more museums i visited last year. very fulfilling! |
