Trier Why Trier?
Trier is one of those rare places that can satisfy high expectations for a holiday destination offering fine art, architecture and an almost overwhelming opportunity to study a rich collection of local cultural artifacts and customs. All this and with the close proximity between most sights of interest, ample hotel availability and thorough network of public transportation throughout the city, I never missed my automobile.
Trier, Germany’s oldest city, draws over a million tourists each year, most of them from Germany itself or from nearby France and Luxembourg. I did come across a handful of native English language speakers from both sides of the Atlantic while I was there, usually at one of the many sights of interest. Among the daily throngs of visitors to the Market Center, English-speaking tourists seemed to be lost in the local crowd.
Trier is a city that should be celebrated for its ability to preserve both its historical architecture and its multifaceted and long rooted culture. For a time, Trier was the seat of Roman rule in Europe and should be credited for its influence on the development of Western European Culture. Every step through this proud city offers a brilliant showcase of history artfully expressed through form and function.
Trier is home to many of Germany's oldest buildings of national importance. Trier is also home to at least seven sights included in the "UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage" list. Nearly all of these can be hastily visited on foot in a single day - though I would recommend that you take the time to explore these wonders and not just "see" them. I'll include a few more days in Trier during my next holiday if possible. |
Oh - Don't forget the wine! If you spend a holiday in Trier, then you must learn these important terms so crucial to life along much of the Mosel River Valley: Spatlese – Dry; Auslese – Semi-dry; Beerenauslese – Semi-sweet; and finally, Trockenbeerenauslese – Sweet.
I hope you enjoy some of the highlights of my April, 2004 holiday. Peace!, and Happy Trails, Wayne |
