Cross Island Whaling

(ALL PHOTOS TAKEN BY MICHEAL GALGINAITIS, AN ANTHROPOLOGIST STUDYING FOR THE GOV'T) I went out whaling with Thomas Napageak's crew this year and here are a few pics from Cross Island, Nuiqsit whalers base camp during whaling season, approximately 80 miles east of Nuiqsit and C.Island is 14 miles north-northeast from west dock at Prudhoe Bay......This is me helping cut up a 41 foot bowhead.....This is my first time Whaling and one of my all time favorite experiences, thanks to Thomas Napageak Sr and Jr. Whaling season started sept 1 and we left Cross Island sept 10, Nuiqsit got their quota of 4 whales early after the start of the season, i've heard stories of them getting stuck on Cross Island because of freeze up, the most exciting part of Whaling is the chase, when someone see's a Whale blow then they'd get on the radio telling everyone else out in the hunt that they see a blow at such and such a place, every boat in the area would head out in the direction and help out with the hunt and also help out towing the Bowhead back to Cross Island for the harvest.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:ahhhhhh, it's very very cold there right now, dunno
