Not for the faint-hearted!

Inside a 'holding' barrack

Gruesome concentration camps

Had to see what went on during the holocaust.

These camps, about 1.5 hours from Krakow, give you an idea of how cruel man can and has been.

Saw Auschwitz I & Auschwitz II, Birkenau, where mass genocide took place.
The hangrail

Auschwitz I

Here they show a B&W film summing up what took place here.

There are numerous buildings holding factual data, photos, statistics, physical evidence, confiscated articles of the victims.

A wall between 2 sheds riddled with bullet holes against which victims were lined-up & killed.

A railway sleeper that served as gallows for simultaneous group hangings. Luckily Rodulf Hess, an officer in charge, met his fate the same way, at the same spot.
The cramped bunks inside a barrack

Auschwitz II, Birkenau site

The HUGE place with 4 gas chambers, very well planned set-up, a secluded remote site built for 1 & 1 purpose only - exterminate certain selected groups.

Loads of barracks showing the atrocious conditions in which people were contained before being led to their cruel deaths

Pros:"An educational fact about human cruelty"
Cons:"Provokes a feeling of sorrow & helplessness towards the victims"
In A Nutshell:"Preserved death camps of Nazi genocide"

I live ca 20 min. by car from Auschwitz. Well, everytime I visit it I think over the future ---> something like this never to repeat but even in "civilized" Europe we had genocide, say in former Yugoslavia in not that old past.

Am going to visit here in October & am busy reading about the holocaust although perhaps nothing can prepare one for the sorrow "Those that do not learn from history are destined to repeat it" words of George Santayana
