Elephant Butte Lake State Park, New Mexico, US

by e7forever - last update: Oct 31, 2005

Elephant Butte Reservoir was made in 1916 using the Rio Grande as its source of water. It is 40 miles long and has well over 200 miles of shoreline.

The primary reason for making this reservoir is for irrigation purposes, however Elephant Butte is the best place to be in New Mexico for water recreation.

They support many water activities including but not limited to Water Skiing, Jet Skiing and Fishing.

I camped here for about four days. It is very hot here in the summer but it feels good to get into the water. This is a great place to go boating or jetskiing or even fishing. We had a boat and had a great time. It is so large that there is plenty of room to drive your boat around and jet ski pretty much anywhere you want. If you have a boat and are in the area I would recommend staying here for a few days. Even if you don't if you want to fish or just get in the water, this is a nice place to do it.

Nothing feels better than to jump into cool water on a hot summer's day.

This is a part of New Mexico I haven't seen yet. Looks like a great place to cool off.
