"Kassel - The Herkules Monument" Kassel by jimmy_chua

Kassel is one of the most under-rated place in Germany, in my opinion. Maybe because it is too far from any of the main cities in Germany. But do not spend few days here as it is sufficient for a day visit.

Upon reaching, the old town is a nice place to roam around, especially the Rathaus. Then head to the landmark of Kassel, the Herkules monument. It is a castle but unique in terms of shape. On top of a hill, the monument is a pentagon (or hexagon) shape with a man-made fountain and river down to the bottom of the hill. I do not think there is such a big monument anywhere in the world. The view down from the top is quite nice with jungle on both side.

It was autumn and a stroll through the jungle was nice and abit cold. The view from below is equally beautiful. A big field below with a lake and some museums make this place a beautiful nature sight. Definitely worth a day visit.

oh, you actually call the centre an "old town"... it's been destroyed 100% in WW 2, so there's not really much left of an old town. just thought i let you know
