General Description of Matagalpa

The department of Matagalpa is located in the northern region of the country. This mountainous area offers superb scenery and the forested slopes of the many hills and mountains provide great possibilities for white water kayaking, hiking and other outdoor activities. With around 110,000 residents Matagalpa is a fairly large city by Nicaraguan standards. There are several low end, but clean hotels and various restaurants. Matagalpa is also famous for its coffee production and it is an excellent place to learn more about how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed. Recently, the tourism sector has started to promote the coffee-route of Matagalpa. This project focuses at promoting coffee farm visits, which allows tourists to learn more about the complete process that brings the coffee bean from the plantation to the final customer. The different stages in this process include growing, harvesting, defruiting, drying, roasting, and grinding, and at many coffee farms most of these steps can be observed first-hand. Pros and Cons
  • Pros:close to many outdoor activities and wide open natural experiences
  • Cons:sometimes roads can be rough...this is a big-small town, don't expect fine dining and ritzy hotels
  • In a nutshell:Love it, might end up moving there. Lots of trees, rivers and lakes. Great fishing, kayaking, rock climbing

Even though I lived in Nicaragua for nine months I haven't been to Matagalpa, and during my up-coming trip it is not included either. Hope to return next year as well though, and then I will visit the region!
