Rada old city

by Nansen - last update: Apr 22, 2005

Merchant in Rada´s suq
Rada is still a typical yemeni city, thanks to the fact Al Bayda is the main city of the region, so Rada has remainded more traditional. It is in the way from Bir Ali beaches to Yemenian Highlands and Sanaa,

Although there was an ancient settlement, the city had its main importance under Tahirid family government, in XV century.
These rulers were finally defeated by Turks in 1517.The most interesting buildings are from this period, near the old fortress of the city.
Kaur al Audhillah Pass
To reach Al-Bayda region from the coast is not easy: You have to travel by the famous Kaur al Audhillah Pass.
Kaur Pass is 1000 m high "wall" that rises from the coastal plains to the highlands. The road is at this place very dangerous, with lots of bends but well-conservated. The building of the road lasted more than 30 years, and was ended in 1967.
